RULES AND REGULATIONS
ENTRANT CATEGORIES:
A Novice is defined as a non-professional who has not yet won at least one of the following: Five (5) or more 1st place ribbons, or an AOS/ODC trophy, or a Best of Class Award at any AOS-judged orchid show
A Hobbyist is defined as a non-professional who has won at least one of the following: Five (5) or more 1st place ribbons, or an AOS/ODC trophy, or a Best of Class Award at any AOS-judged orchid show
A Commercial entrant is defined as a professional or business entrant who sells to the general public from an established place of business and whose primary source of income stems from the sale of plants and supplies.
GENERAL RULES AND REGULATIONS:
1. Authority: The decisions and rulings of the judges will be final with respect to all awards. The decisions of the Show Chair are final with respect to all other matters pertaining to the show.
2. Judging: Only the judges and their assistants will be permitted in the area where judging is in progress. The Chair of Judges may establish additional classes if he deems it necessary.
3. Diseases and Pests: For your protection and the protection of other growers, NO plant with visible insects, pests, or disease will be accepted for entry. The Show Chair and Chair of Judges reserve the right to pull any diseased plant or plant with pests. Plants shall be in good, presentable condition. This applies to commercial vendors, also.
4. Plant grooming: Individual orchid plants, including foliage plants, should be groomed prior to display. Grooming includes the removal of all dried and dead plant parts, trimming of leaf tips due to browning, and the cleaning of leaves. The Show Chair may ask you to do additional grooming.
5. Use of artificial materials: No flowers other than natural orchids may be used in exhibits or gardens. Cut flowers, including orchids, are not permitted in gardens, but may be used in exhibits and displays. Some exceptions are made for arrangements and container gardens. See category rules for specifics.
6. Lighting: Any special lighting is the responsibility of the exhibitor. All entrants should bring their own lighting devices and power strips and 25 foot extension cords.
7. Removal: No plant shall be removed, or any display dismantled, prior to 4:00 PM All exhibitors are requested to be present by 3:30 PM Sunday, to prevent misappropriation of plants and material by other than the rightful owner. The Show Committee is not responsible for lost or stolen plants. Sunday without the approval of the Show Chair.
8. Entries: Additional rules are provided in the section applicable to each entry.
9. Personal or property damage: The Show Committee will take reasonable precautions to ensure the safety of property entered for competition or display, but neither the Show Committee, the Society, the Scottish Rite Center, nor persons controlling the show will be responsible for personal or property damage.
10. Water: No water features (ponds, fountains, flumes, etc.) are permitted. Plants may be misted carefully as necessary, but NOT watered. WATER CANNOT TOUCH THE FLOOR AT ANY TIME.
11. Theme Signs: Exhibitors must furnish their theme signs. Signs must present a professional appearance. Theme sign size is not to exceed 8.5" x 14".No individual(s) or sponsor(s) names shall be allowed in garden displays until after judging is completed.
12. Garden and Display signs: The Society will provide and place individual or sponsor name signs, to be placed on the displays after judging.
13. Ribbon Judging: Novice and Hobbyist plants only are open for ribbon judging. First, Second and Third place ribbons may be awarded to the best plants in each entry class.
14. American Orchid Society (AOS) Awards: This Show has been approved for AOS judging. All plants, whether entered for ribbon judging or not, may be considered for AOS awards unless marked by the entrant. If an inflorescence has previously been entered or judged at an AOS function it is considered to have been screened and therefore is not eligible for consideration at this Show. It should be marked “Not for AOS judging”. This will not disqualify the flower from consideration in the proper Ribbon or trophy class. Submission of plants for judging shall obligate the entrant to accept any award granted and to pay any fees connected with such an AOS award, except where it has been clearly indicated before the judging that the entry was not to be AOS judged.
15. Fees: The owner of any plant receiving an AOS award (e.g. HCC, AM, FCC, CCM, etc.) is responsible for the payment of any fees required by the AOS, and for charges for personal slides obtained from the AOS photographer. The AOS fees range from $35 to $60 effective March 2003. Fees may change at the discretion of the AOS.
16. Cymbidium Society of America (CSA) Judging: This Show has been approved for CSA judging to judge cymbidiums, paphiopedilums, and phragmapediums. All appropriate plants, whether entered for ribbon judging or not, may be considered for CSA awards unless otherwise marked by the entrant.
17. Other: In addition to the above rules and regulations, applicable portions of the AOS Handbook on Judging and Exhibition will be followed.
18. Entry Instruction: The following apply to all entrants, except commercial:
• In advance, complete the appropriate Entry Form(s) and keep a copy to assist in reclaiming your plants at the end of the Show.
• Email the registration information to Penny Walgenbach at pjwalgenbach@frontiernet.net by Sunday, April 13.
• Submit your plants at the Plant Registration desk on Friday, April 17. See page 1 for Registration times.
• The Plant Registration personnel will prepare an identification tag for each entry and place the entry in the display area.

The Sacramento Orchid Society Special Award may be presented in all Sections, provided the exhibit is entered for ribbon judging. Additional awards may be presented at the judges' discretion if it is felt that the exhibit is deemed worthy.
The Dick Snow Best Exhibited Species Award may be awarded for the best species exhibited in a garden, display, or entered for judging. Only non-commercial growers who are members of the Sacramento Orchid Society are eligible. Last year’s winner will not be eligible for the award this year, since while a member may win this award more than once, but not two years in a row.
The Judges' Cup Trophy may be awarded for an orchid plant that has unusual merit in the opinion of the judges. The winning plant must be located in a non-commercial class garden and not have won other awards.
The Rob Cutter Memorial Award- best plant shown by a Novice. Only members of the Sacramento Orchid Society are eligible. Previous winners of this award are not eligible.
The Sweepstakes Trophy will be awarded to the SOS member whose plants submitted for ribbon judging result in the highest total ribbon point score based on the following: Blue = 4 points Red = 3 points White = 2 points
Special Complimentary American Orchid Society and Orchid Digest Awards, awarded at Judges’ discretion. These are awarded for Displays of Plants, Flowers and Educational Material.
AOS Gold Certificate: awarded to groups of plants, displays, or collections
AOS Educational Exhibit: awarded to an educational exhibit of outstanding excellence.
The American Orchid Society Trophy may be awarded to a garden deemed meritorious of the award in the opinion of the AOS judges. No size/space requirements.
The American Orchid Society Artistic Certificate for artistic display of orchids in use may be awarded for an outstanding exhibit judged to be exceptionally artistic. Available to Novice, Hobbyist and Commercial entrants.
The Orchid Digest Trophy may be awarded to a non-commercial exhibit at the option of the judges. It may be awarded to an exhibit which, in the opinion of the judges, displays the highest levels of excellence in artistry, taste, and innovation in design and presentation, flower quality and cultural excellence. It is given to encourage the growing of better quality hybrids and species and to encourage their better culture. Judges may also consider the exhibit’s educational value and the rarity of its plant materials. No size/space requirements.
GARDEN, EXHIBIT, AND ARRANGEMENT REGISTRATION
We welcome entries in the Garden, Exhibit and Arrangement Categories, but we need to know how much space to set up to accommodate all entries.

SECTION I: GARDENS
EXHIBITORS: Members of the Sacramento Orchid Society and related orchid groups are eligible.
ENTRANT CATEGORIES: Novice/Hobbyist
JUDGING CRITERIA: Judges will consider flower quality, plant variety, general arrangement, labeling of plants, and the title of the display. There are no restrictions on the number of plants per garden that may be registered for ribbon judging. The primary focal point must be orchids, not the props or foliage. If a garden contains plants provided by multiple growers that are to be considered for judging, then a separate Plant Entry Form for each grower/entrant must be completed.
PLANT LABELING: All orchids in Gardens must be uniformly labeled in an attractive and discrete manner.
Class A: Non-Professional Gardens
A1. Table-top garden with a minimum of 3 blooming orchid plants. Garden size must be a minimum of ½ the size of the table top (approx 3' x 4') and a maximum of the entire table.
A2. Table-top garden with a minimum of 5 blooming orchid plants.
A3. Floor gardens occupying less than 25 square feet, with a minimum of 9 blooming orchid plants.
A4. Floor gardens occupying 25 square feet or more, with a minimum of 15 blooming orchid plants.
SECTION II:EXHIBITS AND DISPLAYS
EXHIBITORS: Members of the Sacramento Orchid Society and related orchid groups.
ENTRANT CATEGORIES: Novice/Hobbyist.
JUDGING CRITERIA: Judges will consider quality, educational quality, general arrangement, appearance of the exhibit, and the title of the display.
Class A: Non-Commercial Exhibits and Displays

SECTION III: INDIVIDUAL PLANTS
EXHIBITORS: Exhibition classes are open to anyone.
ENTRANT CATEGORIES: Novice and Hobbyist
ENTRIES: Non professionals may enter individual plants for ribbon judging, AOS judging, or both. Professionals may enter individual plants for AOS judging, and these plants are eligible for the Best Commercial Plant award.
RULES:
1. Plants entered for individual judging must be correctly identified. Persons entering plants for individual ribbon judging shall be responsible for entering their plants in the correct class, including correct name(s) or parentage of plant, spelling, and any awards given to it. Plant name and class of entry must be submitted on the entry form provided. Assistance will be available at Registration.
2. Plants may only be entered in one class, plus, if qualified, as a specimen plant.
3. Any plant, including those in gardens, may be entered for AOS and for CSA (Cymbidium Society of America) judging. If a plant is not to be considered for AOS and/or CSA judging, please indicate on registration sheet.
4. There is no limit to the number of plants in a garden that may be registered for ribbon judging. A separate entry form for each entrant must be completed for plants located in each garden.
5. Judges retain the option of not judging a plant that is entered in an inappropriate class.
6. The owner of any plant receiving an AOS award (e.g., CCM, FCC, AM, HCC, etc.) is responsible for payment of any certificate and registration fees required by the AOS, and charges for personal slides obtained from the AOS photographer.
7. Plants from non members of the Sacramento Orchid Society that earn an AOS award must remain on display throughout the Show. Owners may claim their plants on Sunday at the close of the Show.

First, second, and third place ribbons will be given, if merited, to non-professional entries in each class section.
The Sweepstakes Trophy
The Best of Class award given to the best plant in each plant class entered by a Novice or Hobbyist. Best of Class awards are only given to Sacramento Orchid Society members in good standing.
The Best Commercial Plant award will be presented to the entry selected by AOS judges.

ADVANCE RESERVATION: If you even THINK you will enter a Container/Basket, you must contact Penny Walgenbach no later than Friday, April 3rd
CATEGORIES: All entrants are considered Hobbyist, i.e. a non-commercial with no restrictions based on past awards.
CLASSES:
1. A container or basket with 3 or fewer blooming orchid plants.
2. A container or basket with 4 or more blooming orchid plants.
RULES: Refer to the Show Rules and Regulations.
1. Each entrant will be allowed only one entry per class for judging.
2. The only blooming plants are to be orchids. Foliage plants and/or dried plant material may be included.
3. Non-decorative pots are to be concealed.
4. Orchids are to be appropriately identified and labeled.
5. The container should enhance the design and the orchids.
6. Size is limited to what can be carried by one person.
7. There must be at least 4 entrances between the two classes for the best of show award to be given.
SECTION V: ORCHID ARRANGEMENTS
EXHIBITORS AND ENTRANTS: Exhibition and competition by members of the Sacramento Orchid Society only, except in
The Open Class that is unrestricted entry.
ADVANCE RESERVATION: If you even THINK you will enter an Arrangement, you must contact Penny Walgenbach no later than Friday, April 3rd
CATEGORIES: Novice, Hobbyist, Miniature, and Open
JUDGING CRITERIA: Accredited Flower Arrangement Judges will consider design, harmony of color and texture, conformity to classes, distinction, originality, condition of materials, technique and utility in placing entries for awards.
RULES: Refer to the Show Rules and Regulations.
1. Each exhibitor will be allowed only one entry per class for judging.
2. The exhibitor is responsible for meeting all entrance requirements.
3. Standard size of arrangements must not exceed 24” wide x 24” deep x 45” high.
4. The exhibitor must have made the entire assembly, including bows, fill, etc.
5. Dried, natural, and/or man-made material may be used to emphasize line. Fresh and/or dried foliage may be used unless otherwise noted.
6. Whole, fresh orchids will be the predominant flowers used in the arrangement. Other flowering material may be used to complement the arrangement but may not dominant arrangement.
7. Arrangements may not be assembled at the Show site. Only accessories, if allowed, may be added at the Show site; arrangements must be completed by 9:30 am on Saturday April 19
8. Entrants are strongly encouraged to procure their own flowers. Chair will make every effort to have blooms available for a nominal fee from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Friday April 18at the Scottish Rite Center or by special arrangement. Let the chair know if you are going to need flowers for your arrangements no later than Friday April 10
9. No Live animals may be used in Arrangements

1. Eyes of Hera: Make an arrangement to the Greek Goddess Hera you must use at least 2 peacock feathers. (Accessories permitted) If you need help obtaining feathers, contact Raymond Prothero.
2. Hats Off To You: Make an arrangement in any type of hat. Sports, Formal, etc.
MINIATURE ENTRY CLASSES:
1. “Pigmy Forest”: Make an arrangement with a Woodland theme. Make no bigger than
5” X 5” X 5”
2. Patriotic Corsage: Make a corsage to wear to the presidential inauguration
3. Patriotic Boutonniere: Make a boutonniere to wear to the presidential inauguration.
